Ultrastructural modifications of the cell surface and intercellular contacts of some transformed cell strains.

چکیده
SUMMARY Normal contact-inhibited and transformed cell cultures have been fixed and embedded in situ for an electron microscopic study of the cell surface and intercellular connections. In a number of experiments, ruthenium red was added to the fixa tives following Luft's technic for visualizing the mucopoly saccharide layer on the cell surface. Cultures of normal rat, Chinese and Syrian hamster embryo cells were compared with 5 different strains of transformed cell lines: Chinese hamster cells transformed in vitro by adenovirus 12, Syrian hamster cells transformed in vivo by adenovirus 12, Syrian hamster cells transformed in vivo by SV4O virus, spontaneously trans formed BHK21 cell line, and finally a spontaneously trans formed rat fibroblast strain. Two main observations are re ported: (a) The character of intercellular contacts was changed in the transformed cells. Whereas close junctions and desmo some-like structures are as frequent as in controls, the so-called tight junctions practically disappeared in the transformed cul tures. (b) The ruthenium red layer was considerably increased in all the five transformed strains compared to the normal controls, suggesting an increase of the mucopolysaccharide de posit at the cell surface.

Improving the Grenade Explosion Method in Solving the Dynamic Cell Formation Problem
Cell formation is the first and most important problem in designing cellular manufacturing systems. We have modeled the dynamic cell formation problem with respect to the minimization of the intercellular movement and cellular reconfiguration costs. Due to the nonpolynomiality of the cell formation models, a newly introduced metaheuristic namely the grenade explosion method (GEM) is applied t...
متن کاملRelationship Between Cell Surface Hydrophobicity and Degradation of Hexadecane
Some properties of compounds in degrading bacteria are required for biodegradation of contaminants to higher performance. Those strains which have a high percentage of these features are more effective at biodegradation. The present experiments were designed to measure these parameters. In this study, measurement of cell surface hydrophobic-degrading bacteria was designed which oil was separate...

متن کاملThe Relationship between Cell Surface Hydrophobicity and Antibiotic Resistance of Streptococcal Strains Isolated from Dental Plaque and Caries
Objective Bacterial adhesion is governed by specific and nonspecific interactions such as hydrophobicity. Hydrophobic interactions play a role in the adherence of microorganisms to a wide variety of surfaces and facilitate biofilm formation due to bacterial adhesion. In this article the relation between cell surface hydrophobicity and antibiotic resistance was studied. Materials and Methods ...

Background and Objective: As apoptotic cell death is extremely involved in physiological development and many pathological situations such as cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, the understanding of its molecular machinery can be useful in designing new therapeutic strategies. The present study investigated the temporal expression of the proapoptotic protein Bax in adult spinal motoneuron...
